I’m guessing that like most Americans, you probably aren’t which is why you must start incorporating quality supplements into your daily regime.

Taking a high-quality multi-vitamin is critical.

What constitutes a high-quality supplement?

A high-quality supplement is one in which the ingredients are accurately labeled and contain authentic claims. There isn’t anything hidden in it that shouldn’t be.

We are lucky that we have information at our fingertips today. So do your research and inquire about companies and evaluate them. Is the company transparent about their ingredients? Do they use third-party testing to determine validity? Do the products have any certifications?

There are plenty of options out there, but you probably will do best with a whole foods type of vitamin. Basically, it is made from real plants and fruits. The formulations are easier for the body to break down and absorb.

Choosing a quality fish oil can be difficult. You need to understand how to read the label. The omega-3 content is expressed in milligrams of EPA and DHA. To determine the amount of Omega- 3’s you are really getting you will need to add up the listed milligrams of both EPA and DHA.

Also pay attention to the serving size. Some fish oils, while they are quality may involve taking quite a few pills a day to achieve the higher level of Omega-3’s that you want. You may not want to take as many pills and therefore should read the labels carefully.

Make sure you are choosing a brand that has had their products independently tested and verified for purity. Fish oils can be contaminated with high levels of toxins such as mercury or PCBs. These types of chemicals can disrupt your hormones and make your PCOS worse!!

Probiotics are supplements that contain live bacteria. These bacteria are beneficial to keeping your digestive system thriving and healthy.

Choosing a quality probiotic is essential because you want to make sure you are getting enough “good” bacteria.

Look for brands that have various strains of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. These are two important strands of bacteria that will help keep you healthy.

Probiotics should have an expiration date and that is important since these bacteria are live. You want them to be as fresh as possible to reap the benefits. As a good rule of thumb, I always store them in the refrigerator. Heat will kill the bacteria faster.

Finding a noteworthy probiotic can be one of the tougher supplements to figure out. If you don’t want to spend hours researching, try this one.

In regards to dosing, you only need to take one a day. But always read the suggested serving as some brands might require you to take more.

It is wise to have your vitamin D levels checked. That is easily done with a blood test checking serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D. Ideally, you want your levels to be between 50-70 ng/ml.

Dosing depends on how deficient you are. However, if you are deficient starting with a dose of 2,000 IU of vitamin D would probably be a good place to start. Once you have your levels, your doctor can recommend the appropriate amount for your specific needs.
