How to Avoid Stress During the Holidays
Holiday season is upon us whether you like it or not!
You either associate joy, love, family and friends, and celebration or conflict, stress, drama, and anxiety with the holidays. If you are the latter, today’s article is for you!
Unfortunately, the holidays can be a time of substantial stress for people. To help you cope with any unneeded stress during the holidays, I have four tips to help you de-stress and relax this season.
According to studies, most people feel that their stress increases during the holidays. This study concluded that this was especially true for women. Women tend to play a larger role and have more responsibilities during the holiday season.
So what can you do to avoid the stress that you feel creeping around the corner?
1. Schedule Me Time
Let’s face it; you are running around trying to get things done for everyone else. But what about you?
If you are burned out, how are the holidays going to be enjoyable for everyone who you are trying so hard to please? Taking time for yourself is important.
So, schedule a block of time just for you! Whatever relaxes and calms your mind would be ideal. It can be as simple as watching that Netflix show you have been dying to see, reading a book, getting your nails done, going for a run or walk, unwinding with a glass of wine or beer, etc.
Once you have recharged your batteries, you will be back to a place where you can feel fresh and start renewed.
2. Rest Up
Make sure you are getting enough sleep. No one wants to be around a cranky pants!
If you aren’t well-rested, you can forget about getting things checked off your list because you will be too tired and impatient to want to tackle your to-dos.
Holiday tasks take a lot of time and energy, and if you're not well-rested, this will certainly stress you out.
3. Create a Budget
The holidays can be expensive if you are not careful. Create a budget of what you are comfortable spending. Then break it down into categories like food & beverage, gifts, parties, decorations, travel, etc. This way you will know what you can afford when you are shopping.
It isn’t just gifts that make the bills pile up; it is all the other things listed above that add up because you don’t think about it. Once you have a visual on paper, you can easily track your spending and reel it in if you start to veer off track.
4. Show Gratitude
It is easy to forget what the holidays are supposed to be about. Remember that the holidays are meant to be filled with joy, love, excitement, and gratitude.
Be thankful for all that you have and all the opportunities that you have been given. Many people would do anything to trade their situations with you. A grateful attitude will always yield good fortune!
